Nursing Informatics has thought me many things not only within the course but generally in life. I have learnt that “Learning” is not only for a period, but it’s lifelong as we live in a dynamic world where the practices of today would not hold for tomorrow as change is necessary for improvements. I have also been made to understand that time is of essence.
With no prior knowledge of what Nursing Informatics was, I have now come to appreciate this course as a vital tool in nursing education and healthcare expansion and development as the need for informatics competency has grown, driven by the use of technology in clinical practice.
I was challenged to expand my computer literacy skills as my previous knowledge was basic. No longer would I stare at applications/ programs such as Excel, Access and Publisher again, without knowing what it’s for and being able to navigate it. Skills such as word processing, spreadsheet and database applications, and designing presentations using appropriate software were appreciated. I was also able to develop information literacy skills as I am now able to locate, access and evaluate clinical data from scholarly web based resources which can be communicated online via emails or social media all in aid of promoting health and expanding health care education.
Throughout the course I was able to derive a true understanding of how information technology is incorporated into healthcare and at my workplace. It’s amazing to see how technology has organized nursing practices as information can be retrieved and disseminated in high speeds, patient care and safety has been optimized and many more benefits even at our finger tips. I have become more knowledgeable about health information concepts and the technology that is designed to manage and process information.
The challenges I encountered during my study were mainly due to improper time management and procrastination. The immense workload of this course may have prepared me of what to expect in the future and view the importance of a sticking to goals and wisely managing my time.
I enjoyed this course despite the challenges as it provides invaluable assistance not only in decision making within healthcare but eases our way of living and working.
